WHat is Thin CLT? - A Guide for architects + Designers
Thin CLT, also referred to as micro or nano CLT, is a three-layer, cross-laminated wood panel starting at ¾” thick. While the terminology may vary depending on region, the material itself remains the same. Thin CLT is designed to bridge the gap between structural CLT and finished architectural applications, allowing architects and designers to extend the visual consistency of mass timber throughout a building.
At TorZo Surfaces, Thin CLT is approached as a highly customizable solution tailored to meet the specific needs of each project. We work with any North American wood species and offer flexibility in panel size and no minimum quantity. Additional customization options include grain matching, lamella width, thicknesses ranging from ¾” to 4”, and precision fabrication such as cut-to-size panels. For example, Thin CLT can be used to wrap exposed steel components so they visually align with surrounding timber elements, creating a continuous design throughout a space. We also create custom elements like access panels, allowing for seamless integration within a building while maintaining the integrity of the design. Our goal is to provide customers with a complete and adaptable solution for incorporating Thin CLT into their projects.
One of Thin CLT's sustainability benefits is its ability to sequester carbon. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it within their wood fibers. When that wood is manufactured into long-lasting products like Thin CLT, much of the carbon remains stored for the life of the panel.
TorZo's Thin CLT is available with FSC®-certified lumber, supporting projects with responsibly sourced wood. Beyond material sourcing, Thin CLT is designed to maximize lumber utilization by placing premium appearance boards on the exposed face and using boards with more natural character in the concealed core or back layers. This efficient manufacturing approach reduces material waste while delivering a durable, high-quality panel.
Thin CLT represents the benefits beyond structural applications and into the finer details of design. By combining versatility, customization, and a refined natural appearance, it enables architects and designers to create cohesive environments without compromise. At the same time, it supports a more sustainable approach to building through responsible sourcing, efficient material use, and long-term carbon storage. As the demand for smarter, more sustainable materials continues to grow, Thin CLT stands out as a practical and impactful solution.
