Thin clt and sustainability: making the most of every board

Sustainability in wood construction often starts with where the lumber comes from. Responsible sourcing matters, but it’s only part of the story. What happens with the lumber once it reaches the manufacturer matters too. With Thin CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber), sustainability is built into the way the panel is made. Its three-layer construction allows different grades of lumber to serve different purposes within a single panel. That means more of the available wood can be put to use while creating a strong, stable, and carbon-conscious product.

Trees naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (photosynthesis); that carbon becomes stored within the wood fibers. When a tree is harvested and the lumber is turned into a long-lasting building product, much of that carbon remains stored in the wood throughout the product's life. This is one of the reasons wood has become an important part of the conversation around lower-carbon and sustainable building materials. Thin CLT takes that natural benefit and creates opportunities to introduce solid wood into parts of a project where wood may not traditionally have been considered. 

One of the benefits of Thin CLT comes down to a simple idea: every board doesn’t need to look perfect to have value. Lumber is a natural material, and characteristics like knots and color variation don’t make a board any less useful. Thin CLT’s three-layer construction allows different grades of lumber to be used where they make the most sense. Premium appearance boards can be selected for the exposed face, while lumber with more natural visual characteristics can be used in the core or back. Cross-laminating these layers creates a strong, dimensionally stable panel while making more efficient use of the available wood resource. Rather than determining a board’s value by appearance alone, Thin CLT gives each piece a purpose. This approach helps maximize usable lumber, reduce unnecessary waste, and keep more wood and the carbon stored within it, in productive use for the life of the product.

Sustainability also extends beyond the panel itself. Thin CLT can be manufactured domestically with a traceable wood supply, allowing us to identify where the lumber was sourced and provide a clear connection from the forest to the finished panel. Domestic production can also reduce overseas shipping, shorten transportation distances, simplify logistics, and support faster delivery. 

Sustainability is about more than any single attribute or certification; it’s about making thoughtful use of a resource from the forest through the life of the finished product. Thin CLT reflects that approach by using lumber efficiently, incorporating multiple grades, storing carbon in a long-lasting wood product, and supporting domestic manufacturing. The result is a practical way to bring more wood into modern construction while getting more value from the resource. Use the right board in the right place, give every layer a purpose, and get as much value as possible from the natural resource.
